Oregon Grape Root - Organic
Mahonia aquifolium
Organic, cut and sifted
Despite its common name, this plant is not related to grapes but is actually a member of the barberry family. The bright yellow inner bark of the root has been valued in traditional Pacific Northwest herbalism for generations.
The roots are cut and sifted to provide optimal quality for herbal preparations. Known for their distinctive bright yellow color due to naturally occurring alkaloids, oregon grape roots have a characteristic bitter taste and have been incorporated into various traditional botanical preparations by indigenous peoples of the region.

Traditional Uses
Oregon grape root has been historically valued in Pacific Northwest indigenous traditions, where it was commonly used in various botanical preparations. In traditional herbalism, the bright yellow root was often incorporated into teas, tinctures, and topical preparations. The plant has been part of traditional knowledge systems for centuries, particularly valued for its distinctive color and bitter taste profile in herbal practices.
Preparation
Steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried oregon grape root in hot water for 15-20 minutes to make a bitter herbal tea. The root can also be used to make tinctures and extracts, incorporated into topical preparations, or combined with other herbs for custom botanical blends. Due to its intensely bitter taste, many prefer to blend it with more palatable herbs or use it in smaller quantities in herbal formulations.
